Frances: The Remarkable Story of Princess Diana's Mother by Max Ridddington
Published 2003
256 Pages
ISBN: 1843170434

Frances is unique amongst royal-by-proximity biographies in that it actually has input from its subject. Had it not done so, it would have been culled from what is already in the public domain and Diana's own recollections. This would have made for a sad and incomplete portrait of Frances Shand Kydd, who died in 2004.

It's unfortunate but inevitable that Diana's family will be overshadowed by their association with her. Their individual stories becoming mere anecdotal footnotes in her life story. But Diana would not have become the person she was were it not for her parents - Frances Shand Kydd  and Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer.

Before Diana and the global fame associated with her there was Frances. And her story is a worthy read in order to find out more about someone who was a fascinating individual in her own right.

A Hundred Years of Royal Style by Colin McDowell
192 Pages
Published 1985
ISBN: 0584110715

I learnt about this book via the @royaltybookfan twitter-feed. It's a fantastic feed to find out about more obscure publications in ebook format. My ereader is seriously close to smoking from the amount I've downloaded since I started following.

Books relating to royal style tend to focus on Diana. As if there were no other trend setters prior to her existence. A Hundred Years of Royal Style is different in that it covers fashions of royal ladies, even those, such as Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who would not be considered particularly stylish to begin with.

The author discusses the role of royal clothing as well as how, in absence of any real royal news, it has been portrayed in the media. A focus on Queen Alexandra, consort of King Edward VII, reveals a woman who enjoyed clothing and took enjoyment in developing her own look.  In comparison to many of the other royal ladies, like the Queen who, despite having the resources to have fun with fashion, view clothing from nothing more than a practical standpoint.

The book includes interesting details about clothes as well as sketches of outfits for the Queen and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. There's an interesting breakdown of royal warrant-holders for Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and the present Queen from 1901 to 1984. If you need to know who supplied Queen Alexandra with perfume in 1914, then this book is definately the one for you.

The Royals the Lives and Loves of the British Monarchs by Leslie Carroll
Published 2011
175 Pages
ISBN: 9781435136205

I found out about The Royals via @onechicgeek on twitter. I was intrigued, mainly because it features 'rare memorabilia'. At the time I bought it, it was exclusively available through Barnes and Noble. Now it has finally come to Amazon!

The Royals is entertaining and the memorabilia is interesting, though the handwriting is impossible to read. Namely Princess Elizabeth (Future Queen Elizabeth I) letter to her half-sister Queen Mary begging her for an audience. Luckily the author gives transcriptions of these documents, otherwise you'd miss out on the point of them.

Reproductions of memorabilia include the execution warrant for Mary, Queen of Scots, William and Catherine's wedding invitation, the Instrument of Abdication, a ticket to Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee ball, as well as a 1901 funeral card for her. Also included is a reproduction of Charles and Diana's Official 1981 Wedding Programme, which, when compared to the original, is nicely done.

My main problem with this book is that there is some gossipy information that seems to be stated as fact: The Queen and Princess Margaret were conceived by artificial insemination. Prince Philip had numerous affairs. Yes, there are rumors about these things, but neither have been proven. So why perpetuate them? I'm not familiar with royal history beyond Queen Victoria, so I can't judge whether there are any other factual errors. Though one review seems to think there are several in the Tudors section of the book.

Were it not for the memorabilia inserts I probably would not have bought The Royals. In all honesty, while this book is a fun read, it would be unremarkable without them.

What recipe calls for over 50kg of Regal-Ice, 50kg of Royal Icing, 20kg of Marzipan and over 40 tubes of Gel Food Colours? …what else? A  celebration cake fit for a Queen!

To celebrate the Queen's 60 years on the throne, Dr. Oetker teamed up with food artist extraordinaire, Prudence Staite, to recreate a 6m² ‘Cupcake Queen’ portrait of Her Majesty with over 2,012 hand-decorated cupcakes.

The edible artwork used ten cans of Gold and Silver Shimmer Spray, 60,000 Silver and Gold Soft Sugar Pearls and over 140 white Wafer Daisies from the Dr. Oetker baking range to adorn the King George IV State Diadem featured in the original iconic image taken by Dorothy Wilding in 1952.

The ‘Cupcake Queen’ was built in Prudence’ studio in Pamington, Gloucestershire and also featured 20kg of Plain and Milk Chocolate Chips and 30kg of Easy Swirl Cupcake Icing, which were used to define the Queen’s face.

Delicious!

Here's a time lapse video of the making of the Cupcake Queen.

Royal Review: The Great Survivors by Peter Conradi

The Great Survivors: How Monarchy Made It into the Twenty-First Century by Peter Conradi
Published 2012
384 Pages
ISBN: 978-1846882159

In 1948, King Farouk of Egypt is reportedly quoted as stating:

"The whole world is in revolt. Soon there will be only five Kings left--the King of England, the King of Spades, The King of Clubs, the King of Hearts, and the King of Diamonds."

He was incorrect. While the House of Windsor is, by far, the most media prominent, it isn't even remotely the only one left. Excluding their Asian, African and Middle Eastern counterparts, six other European countries are monarchies: Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands. Not to mention the royal rulers in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and principalities of Monaco and Liechtenstein. These are The Great Survivors. How they survived when other royal houses tumbled and continue to endure in the twenty-first century is something Peter Conradi (co-author of The King's Speech) tackles in his new book.

The author compares and contrasts the royal houses, covering territory on how they're funded, their controversies and scandals, succession, political power, and grudging love-hate relationship with the media. Clearly, there's more to the relationship between many of these royal houses than their link to Queen Victoria. But researching this information in any depth would require consulting several sources. Now it can be found in one.  For someone like myself, with a passing interest in these monarchies but lacking the energy to delve into individual details, this book is a valuable and fascinating resource. A must have for any royal book collection.

Oscar Beauties

I just wanted to share a few of my favorite Oscar looks for makeup & hair.  While the majority of Hollywood's A-list beauties looked stunning, I chose some that stood out to me and also because I'm partially biased (I heart Rachel McAdams and Sandra Bullock and would die of joy if I could do their makeup one day).  And Carey Mulligan is just adorable in a Mia Farrow kind of way.  I also LOVE her earrings.
What I loved about all 3 ladies was, their makeup and hair just made sense. Everything flowed beautifully. Sandra, in a stunning gold Marchesa dress with a bright raspberry lip, a defined eye and sleek hair was perfection. Rachel, with her gorgeous floral Elie Saab Haute Couture, a soft up-do and soft, yet defined makeup, looked heavenly. And Carey Mulligan, in a black Prada, with her pixie cut and chandelier earrings had very understated makeup that suited her exquisitely. These ladies exemplified what I felt was Oscar glamour at its finest.

A few honorably mentions are Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore, Jennifer Lopez, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Penelope Cruz, and Miley Cyrus.

My least favorite look was Nicole Richie.  I felt the makeup was more appropriate for the Grammy's.  She's a gorgeous girl and does fashion better than most people but she looks best to me when she's got less makeup on and has that glow that suits her so beautifully.  While the makeup itself was a perfect application, I felt the makeup and the girl didn't suit each other in the best way. I still love her though!
I hope you enjoy my favorite looks! Can't wait to see what next year will bring

There are a lot of Hollywood starlets whom I think more often than not look impeccable. They looks stylish from head to toe.
One of my FAVORITES is Hillary Duff. She's a tiny little thing but she always looks phenomenal so i decided to post some of my favorite makeup photos of her. Truth be told, I'd DIE to do her makeup one day down the road but more so than anything, its her makeup artist that I'm regularly inspired by, Chanel makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin.
Aside from being a Hollywood mogul, she's even engaged to a Canuck (Mike Comrie-his family owns the Brick) and sports a rock the size of my head (if you've never met me, i think i have an abnormally large head) and to make matters worse she has a bag/sunglasses/scarf collection that I would DIE for. For reals.

Was the theme for the MET Costume Gala (Metropolitan Museum Institute). The Gala is an opportunity for stars to dress boldly and be a designer muse for the evening. Some actresses and models and the occasional socialite join a particular designer as their guest of the night and wear a design often custom made for them by said designer.
This year's Gala was hosted by Oprah and Oscar de la Renta and the red carpet was, Glam at its best. While the theme of the night was " American Women: Fashioning a National Identity", the carpet was nothing short of fierce dresses, hair and makeup. Everyone looked amazing and the star couple power alone was insane.
I've picked a few of my favorites for overall look. You might notice a trend in some of the dress shapes that i've chosen. What can I say, I love Old hollywood

Its the Freshwearer

Like freshmaker...get it?..mentos? freshmaker..freshwearer? No?
Anyways, the brilliant minds at Lancome have come out with a new foundation called Teint Idole Fresh Wear . Fresh Wear ( as us industry insiders like to call it ;-) ) is a 18-hour long-wear matte, retouch free makeup. Fresh wear , to me, feels like a tinted moisturizer. You don't get the feeling as though you're wearing a full coverage foundation but you get the coverage that you need. You get a beautiful dewy look after application and the beauty is, you need so little of this product. I would recommend only apply where you really need it, which for most individuals is on their T-zone. A little goes a long way and I would suggest applying with a racoon brush (aka stipple brush). Teint Idole Fresh Wear has "shine control technology that keeps the skin looking fresh all day". You get a matte, flawless finish without the need to retouch.
I will admit that I've always been wary of long-wear makeup. There are A LOT of product lines out there that advertise long-wear makeup and to be honest, some REALLY don't work. At the risk of sharing TMI, I sweat, a lot, when its hot and humid outside. I live in Toronto right now and as anyone on the east 'coast' knows, humidity is DISGUSTINGLY high out here. My friend sent me a text the other day saying : "17 days of july were 35 or more with humidity, I swear its not usually like this!" This just shows how horrible the weather is. As for wearing makeup, I don't. Or I should say didn't, until I got Teint Idole Fresh Wear !!
I'd been on the look out for long wear foundation for bridal makeup but one that would stay on well during the humid summer days. A special birdie suggested Fresh Wear to me so I thought to give it a try. I used it on myself on a hot, humid day where I had to wear a full face of makeup to work. It stayed. It really really REALLY stayed. It didn't stop me from sweating (how divine would that be?!) but it stayed put and looked just as good 6 hours later when I was done work. I can promise you this, if it stayed on my face after all my gross sweat, it will stay on your face.
Teint Idole Fresh Wear comes in 12 shades, in simple packaging at an affordable $40/24ml. It is safe for all skin types and it is non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic and Dermatologist tested.
You can pick up your own at your nearest departments store, shopper's drug mart, beauty retailer or online at www.lancome.ca

How to get the Look: Kate Middleton's Wedding Makeup

To contact us Click HERE

People ask me all the time if I'd ever do my own makeup for my wedding day. I've always said no, that I'd rather not have to deal with the stress of doing it myself. Then I heard Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cornwall did her own makeup. Now, the day I get married, I might have a large wedding but its extremely doubtful I would get married in the presence of not only 1,900 people but also the majority of the world watching me exchange vows with a Prince. So, if Kate can do it, I'm pretty sure that I can. Here's a guide to getting Kate's makeup look that she so deftly did on her own. Rumor has it she used Bobbi Brown cosmetics but I've added some of my favorite products to use and tricks to achieve the look!

Step 1: Prep your skin. I can't emphasize the importance of a good skin regimen leading up to your special day. While makeup can do wonders, no one wants to shellack product on their face to create a lit-from-within glow. If you don't already have a skin care regimen, start now! You don't have to go out and buy a plethora of products. Start with your basics : Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer (CTM). Once you get into a solid pattern CTMing of 2x day, everyday, you'll want to incorporate an Exfoliant. Exfoliants are my favvvvvvvvvorite skin care products. They make dull skin look lively, a rough skin feel soft and most importantly they allow your skin to reproduce new skin cells so the old dead ones don't stay around! The best advice I can give you about buying CTM products and an exfoliant is pay attention to what you're buying. If you aren't familiar, ask (ahem! *wink wink*). If you've used them all before but are wanting to upgrade, drop by a few counters, get as much information as possible, get a demonstration of the product and a sample if you can. Its important to educate yourself about the products you buy rather than "i'll just buy it because she/he/they/vogue said its good". Beauty professionals are there to help you but some unfortunately work on a commission basis but if you're a smart cookie (and you are) you can tell the difference between a good beauty professional and a sales-driven one. Continue with your skin care regimen leading up to your wedding day, however, I would suggest if it is within your means, to treat yourself to a facial (or two) the month of your wedding. Getting a facial not only gives your skin a good cleaning but its also an hour to relax and let someone else take care of you. There are so many different facials, so get one that appeals to you but my recommendation would be that if you only get 1, get an oxygen facial. Oxygen facials follow in the similar steps of a regular facial, however an oxygen facial provides a boost of active ingredients to the skin and not only helps with the release of impurities but also gives and overall smoother, brighter looking skin. Many spa's now provide Oxygen facials, I had one at Absolute Spa once and it.was.divine! Rumor has it, Kate Middleton got one too ;-)
Step 2- Groom your brows You can either leave this to a professional if you get it done regularly or groom them yourself but if you've never groomed your brows, please don't get tweezer happy and start plucking away. Ask a friend where they get theirs done and ask for a consult if possible. Strong, clean eyebrows are key in looking fabulous in your wedding photos.
Step 3-Wedding Day Makeup Try if you can to get some sleep the night before. If not, CTM your face as you normally do but after rinsing before applying moisturizer, splash your face with cold water. Not only will it wake you up but it will also perk up your skin. You'll need the following products, I've recommended my favorites to get the look: Primer (Benefit That Gal) Foundation (Lancome Teinte Idole Fresh Wear) Concealer (Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage) Powder ( Makeup Forever HD Microfinish Powder) Eyeshadow (Dior 5-Color Eye Shadow Palette in Rosy Tan) Eyeliner (Bobbi Brown Creamy Eye Pencil is Caviar) Mascara (Lancome Hypnose Mascara Waterproof in Black) Eyebrow color (Bobbi Brown Brow Pencil in Mahogany) Blush (Nars Blush in Amour) Lipliner (Lancome Le Lipstique in Sheer Raspberry) Lipstick/Lipgloss (Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Tulle/ Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Buff)
FACE: Start with a well moisturized face. Apply primer all over with either a brush or your fingers but concentrate the most on the t-zone. Wait a few seconds for it to dry and set before applying foundation. **foundation must match your skin perfectly** I always recommend applying foundation with a brush because you get the most coverage with the least amount of product. Don't use too much foundation, you don't need it but make sure you apply the product evenly and blend really well. Apply concealer under the eyes, in between the eyebrows, around the nose, on your chin and over any blemishes or discoloration you might have. **remember under eye concealer is always one shade lighter than your skin whereas to cover blemishes, etc, it matches your skin** Set with powder using a big powder brush or a velour puff, concentrating on the under eyes, nose, forehead and chin.
EYES: Apply a bit of concealer to the eyelid as a primer and powder to set. Start with the lightest shade (in your palette of brown and peachy colors) and apply all over your eye from lash line to brow bone. Use the second lightest shade and contour your eye in the crease. **blend well** Take the second darkest color (not the darkest) and apply on your lid using a light application. Using your eye pencil, draw a line as close to your lash line as possible from the outside in towards the tear duct. Take an angle brush and the darkest shadow shade, go over the line softly to both smudge it lightly and set the shadow. Do this last step on the bottom lash line as well. Curl your lashes and swipe two coats of waterproof mascara.
BROWS: Sharpen your eye brow pencil and lightly brush strokes as if mimicking individual brow hairs on your eye brow. Fill in the brow and using a clean angle brush, smooth over the lines and perfect your brow shape making sure the color is evenly applied and no smudges outside the brow shape.
CHEEKS: Smile to find the apples of your cheeks and using a light hand, apply the pink shade from the apples of your cheek up towards the ear/hairline blending well. **a little blush goes a long way so don't over apply but apply just enough that you can see it and it complements the rest of your look**
LIPS: Make sure your lips are free of cracking and smooth **the night before, use your exfoliant on an old toothbrush and "brush" your lips for a smooth, soft lip the next morning** Fill your lip in with lipliner and brush to even it out. Using a stiff lip brush, apply lipstick all over to fill in the lips. Finish off with a bit of gloss (not too much!)
VOILA!! Now you look like a Princess!

Is Kate Middleton Pregnant?

Is Kate Middleton Pregnant? That seems to be the rumors of all the supermarket mag mags? The following is a story from ABC's website:

Kate Middleton Pregnant
Kate Middleton’s refusal to eat peanut paste during a royal appearance in Copenhagen is sparking rumors that she may be pregnant with a little peanut her
self.

Cameras caught Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, politely declining to sample a bite of peanut paste as she and Prince William visited a United Nations aid depot in Copenhagen on Wednesday.

Doctors and government experts have long urged pregnant women to stay away from peanuts and their byproducts to avoid allergies.

While her husband and hosts, the Danish Crown Prince and his wife, dug into the paste, a staple of UNICEF packages handed out in areas suffering from famine, Kate said no. Reports say she also gave her husband a knowing look as he examined the paste’s packaging and label.

Adding to the speculation is the reaction from the Palace, which is normally mum on all matters Kate.

“Her spokesman went out of their way to stress that she has no nut allergy whatsoever,” Duncan Larcombe, royal editor for The Sun, told ABC News.

Also fanning the rumor mill is the timing of a potential pregnancy for Kate.

Just last week, the British parliament changed the country’s succession rules – in place for more than 300 years — to allow females to become the head of the monarchy. In other words, if Kate is indeed pregnant, and it’s a girl, the baby could be queen.

British Prime Minister David Cameron was said to have initiated the change in the rules so that the first child of William and Kate could benefit regardless of the sex.

Kate’s headline-making “no” to the peanut paste came as she and William made their official overseas humanitarian trip.

While in Copenhagen, the newlywed royals learned more about the situation in drought-stricken East Africa, toured the UN facility and even pitched in to help pack cardboard boxes of supplies.

While Kate’s dietary choices may have indicated impending motherhood, her fashion choices on the trip did not.

In Copenhagen, the famously svelte and stylish royal donned a slim red coat, cinched tightly at the waist with a gold-accented crocodile belt, and there was not a baby bump in site.

Is the Royal couple Will and Kate looking for a bigger place to live because they are expanding their family? Well I'm sure you all have heard the pregnancy rumors, if not you can read about it here: Is Kate Middleton Pregnant?

The following story comes from ABC News Website.

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

ABC News’ Lama Hasan and Alyssa Newcomb Report:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be trading their modest two bedroom London apartment for some more opulent digs, but only after an extreme home makeover.

The new apartment, which hasn’t been lived in since Princess Margaret died in 2002, has no hot water, asbestos in the walls, and decades old electrics. It’s estimated that $1.6 million in renovations will need to be done before it becomes liveable.

But the royals are willing to wait.

Prince William knows the four story, 20 room apartment well — it’s where he was raised by Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

So are the new digs a sign the couple plans to start a family?

”They will need domestic staff and there’s plenty of room to have those and it’s also got a nursery up on the 3rd floor so it’s a ready made family home,” said Katie Nicholl, a royals reporter for The Daily Mail.

Earlier this week, Kate sparked pregnancy rumors after she declined to eat peanut paste while on a humanitarian visit to a United Nations aid depot in Copenhagen.

”Who knows [if she's pregnant]. this is a couple that do things very secretly,” Nicholl said. “The palace isn’t commenting either way, but I suspect this will not be the first or last preg rumor.”

Whenever the time comes, the royal couple can rest assured they will have just the place to raise a future king or queen.
